Tourist AttractionsChâteau de Haut-KoenigsbourgThis is by far the most popular attraction in Alsace, built in the 12th century by the Hohenstaufens. Destroyed in 1462, it was rebuilt under the Habsbourgs and then burned down in 1633. Kaiser Wilhelm II rebuilt the ruin at the end of the 19th century in Romantic Neo-Gothic-style. At 700m above sea level, the castle overlooks the Rhineland countryside the Black Forest and the Alps from one side, the high Vosges, wine villages and vineyards from the other. StrasbourgAs one of the capitals of the European Union, Strasbourg is known as the crossroads to Europe. Famous places to visit include the Palais de l'Europe, situated on the outskirts of the city centre and the famous Cathédrale Notre Dame. The Alsace Route du VinThis wine route stretches over 180 km from Marlenheim to Thann and allows the visitor to discover cobbled streets, mediaeval timber-framed houses and Renaissance fountains. The area includes a number of sentiers viticoles, which are paths through the vineyards themselves. VerdunThis town, forever associated with the World War I is renowned for its numerous battlefields, trenches and a few remaining forts. The landscape around is dominated by memorials, including the famous Ossuaire de Douaumont, where the remains of 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers are buried. Selected tourism websites:
